Eco-friendly Cleaning Hacks
The goal shared by many of us this year is to become more eco-friendly. Now more than ever, people are looking to change the way they do things, like cleaning, to be more sustainable and less harmful to the environment.
The go-to for many is to mix-up their cleaning products and start using more natural ones that do the job just as well, or even better. Rather than purchasing lots of different products for each specific item in your space that will be packaged in plastic and can’t be recycled, turning to products which are multipurpose, or natural, can go a long way to help the planet.
So, here are some eco-friendly cleaning hacks to get you towards your goal of cleaning more sustainably.
· You can create a DIY all-purpose surface cleaner by mixing 60ml of distilled white vinegar with a tablespoon of baking soda, a litre of warm water, and the juice of half a lemon (you can even throw in the skin for a fresh scent). The acidity of the vinegar makes it the perfect disinfectant to wipe away bacteria, the lemon is a natural bleach, and the baking soda will remove grease and dissolve dirt.
· Sometimes, we all suffer from a smelly fridge, and cleaning it out entirely helps but the smell can linger. To keep the odours away, fill a glass with 230 grams of baking soda, placing it in either a back corner or the fried door. It will absorb and help neutralise any unpleasant odours. Remember to change it every couple of weeks!
· Cut a lemon in half and squeeze each half into a microwave-safe bowl filled halfway with water. Set your microwave on a high heat setting and microwave the mixture for 2 – 3 minutes. It’ll loosen up all the grease and grime, making it easy to wipe away!
· Stay with us for this one… Keep your bathroom mirror from getting foggy by polishing them with shaving foam. All you need to do is spray the mirror with a generous covering of foam and wipe away with kitchen roll.
· One of the worst things in the bathroom can be a mildew-y shower curtain, which usually signals that it’s time to get a new one. However, before you throw it away, try putting in your washing machine and add some baking soda to your detergent. It should lift the mildew from the curtain with ease!
· This one should be used with caution… If you’ve discovered some marks on your wall, like a child’s latest masterpiece after getting creative with some crayons, then this is for you. Put a couple of drops of a tea tree essential oil onto a slice of brown bread, make sure the oiled side is facing the wall, and gently rub the crayon away.
· Accidents happen and they may leave you with a stubborn carpet stain. To get rid of them, mix white vinegar and baking soda to create a paste, then rub it into the stain with a soft cloth, leave to dry, and hoover away any leftover baking soda!
